New area code to bring headaches
Oskaloosa businesswoman Carole Hendrix faces costs to reprint pamphlets and business materials as northern Kansas adopts the 785 area code this summer. The change affects Jefferson County and nearby areas with a grace period through Oct 1 1998. Public notices outline boundary lines and expected impacts on printing, directories, and awareness efforts.

Why area codes expand explained by officials by phone
The Kansas Corporation Commission explains the surge in area codes as numbers dwindle due to more lines from pagers cellphones and modems. Experts note rising use of fax machines and computers multiplies numbers while LATAs shape boundaries and dialing rules stay seven digits locally in Kansas City.
