Ottawa budget barks at animal shelter request
Ben Martin Peck Animal Shelter seeks 2006 funding of 59503, up from 45000 approved last year, but city commissioners indicate the increase is unlikely. Mayor Jackson and Commissioner Henningsen question full funding while supporter Larry Mayes argues the amount reflects true costs and donations reduce the shelter’s need. Ottawa handles far more annual intakes than the shelter, adoption exceeds 50 percent, and most pets are spayed or neutered.
