Federal Reserve Tightens Bank Loan Money Supply
The Federal Reserve Board moves to cool the economy by raising reserve requirements for large certificates of deposit from 5 to 8 percent effective June 7. Banks with higher CD growth must hold more reserves, limiting new funds for business lending. The directive also lifts the ceiling on CD rates for large deposits, except for banks with under 10 million outstanding. Overall CD volume and loan activity are up, with business borrowing rising sharply in early year.
