Carter Raises Wheat Target to 3.40 Amid Emergency Farm Bill
President Carter says he will use the emergency farm bill to lift the 1978 wheat target price to 3.40 a bushel, a 40 cent increase. The plan could add about 600 million dollars in income supplements for wheat growers this season, with payments designed to offset idle cropland costs while not driving up food prices. The four year program aims to keep U.S. agriculture fair and competitive, and Carter opposes higher cotton loan rates despite calling the cotton provision undesirable and seeking future elimination.
