Nixon seeks 60 day pretrial detention for dangerous federal felons

A proposed bill to Congress would authorize 60 day pretrial detention for defendants charged with grave federal offenses such as kidnapping bombing racketeering and drug crimes. A hearing with safeguards would precede detention and criteria include prior felony within 10 years free on bail probation or parole and cases with no safe conditions for community safety. The measure mirrors last year’s District of Columbia crime law and faces ACLU criticism as potential constitutional risk.
