Market Anxieties Tighten Around Silver Prices

Speculators hoard an estimated 300 million ounces, keeping prices high after the government ended a 1.29 per ounce ceiling. Since the move, prices drift around 2.30 as debates grow over demand versus speculation and government stockpiles. Treasury undersecretary Robert Wallace cites a 520 million ounce U.S. stock, with 165 million for the stockpile, 65 million for the Atomic Energy Commission, and 218 million for redeeming silver certificates. Redemption pace appears unlikely to exhaust the 218 million ounces.
