Kansas bases survive closing moves big red one returns
Wash ington AP The Pentagon recommended base closings and consolidations, but Kansas and Missouri bases survived. Fort Riley will receive the Army's 1st Infantry Division known as the Big Red One moving from Germany, adding 2,415 military personnel and 440 civilian workers. The division served in Vietnam and Desert Storm.

Kansas Faces Major Base Realignments Under BRAC Plan
Defense officials released a Kansas focused BRAC list proposing the closure of the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons. Fort Riley would gain 2,415 military and 440 civilian jobs, Fort Leavenworth 211 military and eight civilians, Forbes Field 53 military and 194 civilians, with Wichita’s Army Reserve Center losing 22 military and 56 civilians. Net Kansas gains total 3,318 military and 423 civilian positions. McConnell AFB would add 677 military personnel but shed 155 civilians. The plan awaits BRAC review and final approval by November 7.
