NSA quietly builds database of Americans phone calls
Washington says records collection by AT&T Verizon and Bell South began after the 9 11 attacks. USA Today cites anonymous sources noting the NSA program logs who talks to whom, not the content. Officials defend legality and court oversight, while lawmakers seek answers on scope and constitutional compliance. Qwest reportedly refused to participate.
