Airlines rush to fix 737s after safety checks
FAA ordered inspections of older Boeing 737s due to wear in wing fuel tank wiring and piping. By morning 47 aircraft had been checked with signs of abrasion in about half the bundles. United canceled 54 Sunday flights but expected all 18 affected planes to fly today. Southwest completed inspections on 35 planes amid teams of three. No major delays reported beyond shift to next available flights as authorities aimed to prevent fuel-air-electrical sparks in wake of TWA 800 incident concerns.
