Allen Criticizes Senate House Budget Tradeoff at Ottawa Meeting
State Senator Jim Allen told about 20 attendees that the Kansas Senate yielded to House leadership by endorsing a balanced budget at the cost of property tax relief. He urged local school boards to curb spending, noting a $162 million carryover and potential $35 million statewide tax increases. Representative Dorothy Nichols defended the budget, while Allen pressed for stronger school funding and opposed the oil and mineral severance tax. He also announced a tag-licensing reform for owners of cars and small trucks, and voiced doubts on lowering the age to try juveniles as adults. The session targets the May 29 adjournment barring vetoes or special sessions.
