Fire destroys rural Ottawa home of 81 year old Gardner
Garfield Gardner, 81, a retired junk hauler who moved from Kansas City to Ottawa a year ago, lost his two story rented home last night to a blaze blamed on wiring. Gardner, who lives alone, said he tried to fight the fire with a garden hose but the structure burned beyond救. Fire trucks could not respond as the house lay outside city limits and rules set by the Kansas Inspection Bureau. Gardner spent the night at the police station and planned to seek housing and social worker help while awaiting near future relocation.

The 49 to 45 result split along party lines, with 24 Democrats and 25 Republicans voting no and 39 Democrats plus 6 Republicans voting yes. The Kennedy proposal faced opposition as potentially unconstitutional, while the bill directs the Attorney General to test poll tax legality in four states Alabama Mississippi Texas and Virginia. Senate leaders hoped defeat would clear the way for passage this week as political strategy and debate limits were discussed by Ellender Mansfield and Dirksen.
