Six Nashville stores begin partial integration of lunch counters
Six Nashville stores agreed with white and black leaders to serve Negro customers at formerly all-white counters during slack periods. Negroes sat without incident Tuesday as part of an unannounced plan to end sit-ins and avoid violence. The move follows months of counter closures and a nationwide protest wave. In Winston-Salem, a similar demonstration led to arrests and a city manager brokered a temporary truce. A related case in Montgomery touched off debate on a new city ordinance redefining disorderly conduct to provoke a breach of peace.
