Ottawa board members clash over demolishing the former Ottawa Middle School at Station and Main. A 3 to 1 vote with three abstentions failed as four affirmative votes were required. Some members favored waiting for Friends of Historic Buildings to gather support for a ¼ cent sales tax to fund a community center on the August primary ballot.
President Clinton led a show of bipartisan backing for permanent normal trade relations with China in the East Room. Carter, Ford, Kissinger and Gore joined pro trade advocates, stressing the benefits of reform and a stronger global economy despite human rights concerns.
Kansas lawmakers push for at least sixteen million in extra appropriations as part of a transportation budget blueprint. Rep. Todd Tiahrt and Rep. Franklin County marks two centuries since John Brown birth with spring and summer events.
