Senate Okays Bill Empowering USOC National Sports Body
The Senate approved by voice vote a bill to designate the U S Olympic Committee as the national coordinating body for sports in the Olympic and Pan American Games. It will be introduced in the House by Reps Mineta Kemp Michel Metcalf and backed by Senate sponsors Stevens Pearson Stone Culver and Cannon. The measure authorizes USOC spending of 30 million dollars in the coming year to support governing bodies development programs and Olympic training centers plus a sports medicine program. It also empowers the USOC to recognize eligible amateur sports organizations as national governing bodies and to settle athletes rights disputes through the American Arbitration Association.

CHICAGO AP Tony Chiaverini battered Al Bell for four rounds before Bell's trainer threw in the towel signaling the end of the middleweight fight.
