Lawrence Woman Aboard Hijacked Airplane
Lawrence resident Robert Hagen learned his wife Kathryn, a travel agent from Topeka, was aboard a Portugal to Madrid hijacked Boeing 727. The 16 year old hijacker demanded 10 million dollars and fuel for a flight to Switzerland, later freeing 82 passengers after four hours of negotiations in Madrid. Kathryn Hagen said she and others were unaware of the hijacking until landing.

Italian Reports U S Hostage Tried Death by Action
Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci cites an unidentified source in the May issue of the New Republic claiming one American hostage in Iran attempted death by own action three times and may be dead. Goodyear Restructures Topeka Tire Plant
Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. will temporarily discontinue passenger tire production at its Topeka facility and reorganize into a large tire plant using 80 percent of the floor space for various lines from truck tires to earthmover tires. About 2,100 are employed in the tire plant and 350 in distribution and accounting amid industry recessions. Plant manager Jerry Wolf said there is no plant shutdown planned.
