Eviction of famine victims denied by Ethiopian leader
Ethiopia's Marxist ruler Mengistu Haile Mariam said local officials ordered the removal of more than 50,000 famine victims from a feeding camp without central permission. A U.N. official, Kurt Jansson, reported Mengistu promised disciplinary action and said the move was not authorized. The claim contrasts with a government statement denying forcible removal of drought victims from the Ilonet camp 250 miles north of Addis Ababa.
