Kanopolis marks Kansas parks start as centennial events begin
Natural appreciation by TIM UNRUH Selina Journal Kanopolis Lake water keyed a Kansas institution begun here nearly a half century ago. Kanopolis State Park, dedicated May 30, 1959, along the shores of the state's first major reservoir, started a trend of 24 state parks, Rick Martin says. Nearby Ottawa area parks include Pomona, Melvern, Hillsdale and Clinton. The majority of parks cluster at reservoirs and lakes. Saturday opens a year of activities for the 100th anniversary of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks with Kanopolis activities starting at 9 a.m. and continuing through day and evening, with Secretary and former Gov. Mike Hayden present.

Kanopolis State Park grows into major Kansas destination
Kanopolis State Park near Salina has evolved from a few campgrounds to a major tourist draw hosting 230000 visitors yearly. The reservoir built by the U S Army Corps of Engineers during 1942-44 and 1946-48 serves flood control water supply and recreation. The 1966 National Campers and Hikers Association convention drew 12000 to 15000 people from 48 states, spurring infrastructure like a water tank pay phones portable rest rooms and a central Salina parade. Camping now features large boats motor homes and increased electrical needs while five full time staff offer wildlife biology and natural resource programs.

Wheat Quality Tour: Kansas harvest near 420 million bushels
Participants in the Wheat Quality Tour estimate a Kansas wheat harvest of about 420 million bushels for 2005. The three day survey across the state notes generally good conditions with yields near 45 bushels per acre, optimism for a solid year, and caution on frost damage and moisture shortages impacting future production. The official USDA estimate will be released next week as maturity advances and harvest begins in early June.

Federal charges against Max Ary rise to 19 counts
A Wichita grand jury added ten counts to the existing indictment against Max Ary, former Kansas Cosmosphere leader in Hutchinson. The superseding indictment includes three more mail fraud counts, money laundering, interstate transportation of stolen property, and a property-forfeiture count tied to the Cosmosphere artifacts. Ary, who pleaded innocent to the initial charges, faces a broader federal case stemming from space memorabilia missing during a 2003 Oklahoma City search.
