Rebels near Kinshasa press Mobutu in Zaire crisis
U S envoy Bill Richardson urged rebel Laurent Kabila to avoid taking Kinshasa by force and backed a transitional government as rebels claimed control of about three quarters of Zaire and sat 40 miles from Kinshasa. Kabila warned Mobutu to resign within eight days or be driven from power.
