Fulbright Attacks Saigon as American Brothel
Sen. J. W. Fulbright defies calls to quit as Senate Foreign Relations chair and dubs Saigon an American brothel. He cites reports on the impact of American money and soldiers, noting Vietnamese wives or daughters working as bar girls, wives sold to soldiers, and a rising class of bar owners and pimps amid economic inequality and social strain. He faults US influence for widening gaps and triggering stigma and shame among Vietnamese families.
