Methodists Adopt Sweeping Civil Rights Policy

In Pittsburgh delegates at the Methodist Church General Conference approved a policy urging racial desegregation and fair treatment in churches and in communities. The policy, drawn by the Committee on Christian Social Concerns, is church policy but not law and cannot be enforced by expulsion. It calls for open churches, nonsegregated services in invested corporations, equal rights in voting, education, employment, housing, and public accommodations, and elimination of de facto segregation in Methodist schools. The panel’s civil disobedience clause was revised to avoid endorsing civil disobedience. Harold A. Bosley said the change did not weaken the principle. The adoption marks a key policy step as the conference progresses in Pittsburgh.
