Area airman reports for duty in Navy Sea Control Squadron

Navy Airman Apprentice Brian L. Barnett of Garnett reported for duty with Sea Control Squadron 29 at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego. Barnett is the son of Richard L. and Victoria A. Barnett and graduated from Anderson County High School in 1994 after enlisting in January 1994. He joins a family with strong ties to the region.

Local couple stage country shows in OMA venue expansion

Ottawa area couple Mary and Dale Reese bring a country music variety show to an OMA auditorium. The lineup features Karen Boyer, Greg Allen Lawrence, and Merle Haggard impersonator Rance McKenzie with regular guests from Ottawa Baldwin City Wellsville and Burlington. Turkey says men withdrew from northern Iraq

Turkey announced it has pulled out most of its troops from northern Iraq six weeks after 35,000 soldiers crossed the border to wipe out Kurdish rebel bases. Defense Minister Mehmet Golhan said only two soldiers remained, a claim later disputed by deputy prime minister Hikmet Cetin who would not specify numbers. In Istanbul Kurdish demonstrators firebombed Turkish businesses and three women were killed as NATO pressure mounted for a quick conclusion to the offensive.
