Uncle Sam Sucker Sweatshop in Missile Work

Senate inquiry into national defense costs exposes makework rules and inflated pay. An apprentice electrician earns 673 weekly, another 748 weekly, more than Von Braun, and a Van denberg Air Base foreman earns more than the Air Force secretary. Laborers at one base reach 287 weekly, farther than astronauts. Plumbers exceed the commanding general. The probe suggests widespread contractor gains in missile installations.

This And That by joh and the sixties

A reflective column notes aging, education, and youth culture. It muses on conservatives among students, spending on bowling, a professor planning an autobiography, and a posthumous sequel titled Died with His Shoes On. It jokes about dentistry, artists, voting rights, and a Goldwater critique. A teen rock n roll defense and a Chautauqua dance contrast with square dancing on a bicentennial birthday. The piece ends with cautious doubt about future dances by kids.
