Wamego Elm Loses Title As World's Largest American Elm
Louis Vieux, a famous 271 year old elm near Wamego Kansas, failed to regain the national crown as the largest American elm after Virginia's 125 foot tree maintained its lead. Measurements showed Louis Vieux with a 299 inch girth but a shorter height than in 1978 and no crown growth to surpass the Virginia tree, keeping the title at 440 points to 428. Naughton said the tree may widen with time and he will continue measuring.
