First Baptist marks sesquicentennial with events and history
Ottawa’s First Baptist Church celebrates 150 years, inviting churches and the public to a three day sesquicentennial, as RSVP turnout tops 150 for a Saturday banquet. Founders Kalloch Hutchinson and Evans helped establish the church in 1864, which grew from 19 members to about 600 today. The Romanesque Revival building at 417 S Main St, opened 1867 with 1895 addition, remains a historic landmark.

First Baptist Church’s 150 year ties to Ottawa noted
Historical records show the Second Baptist name changed to First Baptist in 1896 and highlight long serving pastors including Rev. W. A. Elliott from 1907 to 1947 and Rev. Roger Fredrikson from 1954 to 1959. Fredrikson, a 1975 Ottawa University graduate, helped launch Adventures in Faith and now serves as pastor alongside ongoing university links. The church helped found Hope House and Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County, with ongoing community involvement as it nears its sesquicentennial.
