Trees return Ottawa’s pledge to plant for future years
City flags highlight Tree City USA status on Main Street as Ottawa notes its commitment rooted in a decade of work. From a tree board origin to Arbor Day contests and park plantings, 14 trees were recently planted at Orlis Cox complex with many more planned at City, Kanza and Forest parks. Forest Park hosts the state champion Swamp White Oak and Shagbark Hickory. Nancy Baker of the Ottawa Recreation Commission calls trees invaluable for shade and wildlife while board member John Heckert cites Joyce Kilmer’s poem to express passion for trees.
