Legislature approves major tax cuts in 1995 session

In Topeka Kansas the Senate and House forged tax cuts amid spending, abortion and gambling debates. They adjourned near midnight, plan a May 22 sine die return, and will not reconvene as a full Legislature until January 8, 1996. Two business tax cuts were approved. One offers a two year unemployment tax relief for compliant businesses. The other phases out the 2.5 percent sales tax on labor in new construction and on electricity and gas used in manufacturing. A compromise vehicle tax reduction was also approved.

Ex Ottawa official and wife die in US 59 crash

The Moores, Robert 69 and Janelle 67 of Ottawa, died when their car crossed center line and hydroplaned on US 59 south of Franklin Douglas County. Westphal 56 of Oskaloosa injured in the collision. Funeral arrangements handled by Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa.
