Dual majority consolidation bill moves forward in Kansas Senate
The Kansas Senate gave first-round approval to a statewide consolidation measure, but adopted a dual majority rule that could block any plan not approved by both city and rural county voters. Senator Brungardt called the provision a deal-breaker likely to doom the bill, while Senator Lee defended it as fair to rural residents. A separate Shawnee County Topeka consolidation bill carried the same dual majority concept, prompting further debate about the measure’s viability.

Kansans weigh impact of same sex marriage ban on abuse protections
Kansas opponents warn the proposed amendment may affect protection orders for unmarried couples including domestic partners. A Franklin County advocate worries the measure could limit access to abuse protections for heterosexual and same sex couples, while supporters argue it defends against recognizing any civil unions. The Ohio case cited by critics illustrates potential unintended consequences, though Kansas officials insist current laws offer protection.
