Justices uphold must carry rule for local stations
The Supreme Court upheld the 1992 Cable Act requiring cable systems to carry local broadcasters. In a 5-4 decision Justice Kennedy said must-carry preserves multiplicity of stations and access to information, despite cable groups arguing free speech limits. The ruling preserves access for about 40 percent of American households without cable and affects affiliates, networks, and public access channels nationwide.
