American aid worker abducted as Somali guard killed in Mogadishu
In Mogadishu gunmen abducted an American Red Cross worker near UN facilities while his Somali guard was killed in a shootout. Suzanne Hofstetter, head of IRCS operations in Somalia, said no ransom demands have been made. The abducted worker, on his second Somalia tour, was the first Red Cross employee kidnapped in the country. Three foreign Red Cross workers had been killed in Somalia between 1991 and 1993.
