Lt William Calley Jr being sentenced to life imprisonment by the same jury that convicted him of murdering 22 Vietnamese villagers at My Lai on March 16, 1968. Washington AP The House Appropriations Committee raised President Nixon's 1972 school budget by 101.1 million in the first annual funding bill. It recommends 4.77 billion for the Office of Education and related agencies starting July 1, totaling 251 million more than the current year.
Residents and landowners within the Pottawatomie Creek basin approved the watershed plan by a 277 vote margin. The unofficial tally was 435 in favor and 158 against, enabling the watershed board to begin an engineer's study and other preliminary work. Any eligible resident or landowner could vote.
Ronald F. Dwyer, state property valuation director, said he has no objection to the Legislature staying for a year his directive ordering statewide changes in farmland valuations to allow an interim study group to work with his department. He testified before the Senate committee as lawmakers consider a stay until rural property is statewide re-evaluated. Several senators criticized the directives but others defended Dwyer, noting the ongoing statewide equalization effort.
U S helicopters landed a small force of elite South Vietnamese commandos in southern Laos in a raid on a North Vietnamese base about five miles from the border. North Vietnam seized and burned most of Duc Duc. 200 civilians killed or wounded, 18 regional militiamen killed, 30% wounded.
The Kansas House approved a 498.57 million welfare appropriation bill for fiscal 1972 by 82 votes to 29. Prelim approval came after a 67-88 defeat on cutting 474 million from the Welfare Department, with 53-62 restoring 6.13 million trimmed earlier. Critics urged welfare cuts or across the board reductions, while supporters argued against using welfare as a whipping boy.
