Apathy Hits Union Rally As Miners Attend Sparse Meeting
United Mine Workers President Sam Church faced a small, unenthusiastic crowd in Charleston WV as he pitched the tentative contract with Bituminous Coal Operators Association. About 50 of District 17's roughly 26,000 members attended the 3,500 seat hall while 25 remained outside. The 160,000 striking miners vote on the proposal Tuesday amid critics who said questions have been answered. Church appeared tired and ordered reporters out of the morning session.
