Rock-a-thon Helps 4-H Club Raise 308 for Cystic Fibrosis

Fourteen Franklin County 4-H members held a 12 hour rock-a-thon at Barbara Stockstill’s home raising 308 dollars for cystic fibrosis. Participants aged eight to 16 rocked from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m., took breaks, and enjoyed games and records while soliciting pledges from peers and local businesses. Glen Stockstill led with 74.64 dollars. Brad Averill netted 61.20. Tom Wilson, 26 dollars. The event supported a plan to fund a Washington D C citizenship shortcourse for 4-H members in August.

No Informational Meetings On 1978 Set Aside Program

Farmers in Franklin County are told informational meetings on the 1978 wheat and feed grain set aside are unlikely this year. Sign up runs through May 1 in the ASCS office to qualify for price support loans and disaster or deficiency payments. Final reporting dates span May 15 for crops and July 25 for acreage reports. Set aside levels are 20 percent for wheat and 10 percent for feed grains, limited to cropland tilled in 1975 1976 or 1977, with no harvest on set aside acres and no grazing April 15 to October 15.

Two Implants Improve Growth in Suckling Calves

Kansas State University research shows growth boosts from implants in suckling calves. One implant at birth, second at 70 to 100 days yields heavier weaning weights, with 45 pounds gain when two implants are used. Reimplant every 100 to 150 days for best results.
