Illinois farmer touts no-till farming long term gains
Jim Kinsella, an Illinois corn and soybean grower with 740 acres using no-till, told Hillsdale Water Quality Project farmers that benefits appear after four to six years. He cited higher soil organic matter, fertility and reduced erosion after 5 to 6 years, with near zero erosion after 10 to 15 years, and noted higher costs upfront but lower trip costs and eventual yield gains. Fellow farmer Mike Guetterman added his family’s operation adopted no-till over 15 years, cutting fuel, labor and horsepower use while boosting yields.
