Utah governor strips attorney general of powers
Utah Governor Mike Leavitt signed a measure stripping Attorney General Jan Graham of the authority to handle civil lawsuits and settlements, transferring power to the governor. The move, described as unprecedented, follows a long power struggle between the Republican governor and the Democratic AG, who faces a January 2001 departure. The National Association of Attorneys General has offered support to Graham, while Alabama lawmakers debate similar power shifts.
