San Francisco meter embezzlement case hits nine workers
Nine city workers and a supervisor in San Francisco face embezzlement charges after authorities say they skimmed coins from parking meters over six years. The scheme netted at least 500000 dollars annually, with some workers taking up to 80000 a year, buying luxury cars on salaries of 10000 to 15000. The investigation also involves six other employees and a suspended tax collector Thad Brown.

Sen John Simpson argues the measure makes wealthy pay their share. oil and gas lobbyists call it a shift in policy seeking to close a tax loophole. The bill, House 2704, to be debated on the Senate floor, faces opposition as supporters stress fairness and revenue for schools while critics warn of a new, second tax on money already taxed.
