Kansas Senate backs phase out of mortgage fee in five years
The Kansas Senate approved Substitute for Senate Bill 298 by 26 to 2 to phase out the mortgage registration fee over five years while raising document processing fees at county registers of deeds over four years. Supporters say it lowers overall costs. opponents warn counties will lose revenue and raise taxes. County officials, led by Franklin County Commissioner Steve Harris, argue the switch amounts to a state tax shift that will drive up property taxes. Tyson defended the measure, noting the bill caps certain fees for small mortgages and spreads costs to all users of document services.
