Kansas fuel tax proposal sparks partisan debate in Senate

Senate Bill 224 would raise Kansas gasoline tax from 24 to 29 cents per gallon on July 1, higher than all neighboring states. Proponents cite funds for roads and bridges while opponents warn of higher consumer costs and argue for spending reforms and KDOT funding protections. Critics say the plan falls short of covering needed modernization as revenue gaps loom. AAA Kansas estimates annual costs per driver vary with miles and efficiency. The tax committee took no action pending broader revenue discussions.
