Education levels rise as income gaps shrink and persist

Census data show record high education levels for Americans 25 and older, with 84 percent high school graduates and 27 percent college graduates. White men with bachelor degrees earned about 65,000 in 2001, while gaps remain for white women, blacks, and Hispanics. Asians lead in college attainment but still earn modestly less than whites. Experts note rising absolute levels but ongoing discrimination and limited job opportunities keep gaps from closing fully.
