Local Model Builder Likes Steamy Things
Ernest Hall from 1117 N. Sycamore is a Santa Fe Railroad track worker who builds steam engines as a hobby. His passion began with a Case engine used by his father to run a grain thresher, and his largest model mirrors that early machine. He uses tin aluminum steel for most parts and copper for the boiler, with a galvanized jacket. The engine runs on live steam and the design yields a quiet operation, though a test can produce a brief bark when the wheel is pressed. Hall works in his garage or heated home shop, assembles models of locomotives and cars, and spends winters off work relaxing into the hobby. He is a World War II veteran who met his wife Annie in England. they moved to the U S when their daughter Janet, now a Topeka nurse, was a baby, and a son Mike, 17, remains at home and has served as an aviator. He hopes to craft an old-fashioned threshing machine to accompany the large engine.
