Dr. Ruth Guttmann reported 58.5 percent survived over a year among 82 treated after exploratory operations, with some living up to eight years and an average of 21 months versus 10 weeks to six months without treatment. In another group of 150 ineligible for operation, survival reached 40 percent at one year and declined to 2.5 percent at five years. Treatment involved 5,000 to 6,000 rads over five to six weeks using a two million volt unit, urging clinicians to offer radiotherapy promptly after exploratory surgery.
