Neighborhoods push to secede from Los Angeles city
From the Pacific Coast to the inland valleys neighborhoods push secession from Los Angeles hoping to form new cities across Southern California. Sherman Oaks and parts of the San Fernando Valley move toward a 2002 ballot, with as much as 60 percent of LA’s population in areas seeking independence. Proponents cite governance and cost benefits, while opponents warn of bureaucracy and reduced federal aid. A June charter vote could blunt the drive by reshaping planning and decentralizing decisions.
