Hearst Sells San Francisco Examiner to Free Press Owners
Hearst Corp sells the San Francisco Examiner to the owners of a free city newspaper, clearing the way for Hearst to acquire the Chronicle. The deal ends the 35 year joint operating agreement, with about 600 reporters and editors moving to Hearst, and a four month transition before full independence in August. The sale closes by March 30 and does not include the Examiner building or presses.
