Ottawa high freshman wins Optimists oratory contest
Laurie White of Ottawa High School won the Ottawa Optimists contest on March 2 and will advance to Zone 8 competition in Emporia on March 26 with a potential regional contest on April 8. Times for the two events are not announced. White is the daughter of Nancy and Terry White. Forensics students from Ottawa High competed at a national qualifying event at Shawnee Heights, with Kayla McCarter earning a national berth for Chicago over Memorial Day Weekend. Last year, Forensics finished second nationally in Milwaukee. An Emporia State University atrium honoring Dr. John R. Webb will be dedicated at 7 p.m. Friday at the Sauder Alumni Center, funded by donors including the Humphreys of Osage City. Webb, ESU emeritus faculty member, died May 19, 2005, nine days after atrium groundbreaking. The project, about $400,000, features donor-engraved windows and bricks, and a cascading waterfall in the north limestone wall.
