Engineered animal heart cells show endless growth in lab
Researchers report in PNAS that mammal heart cells can be genetically altered to divide endlessly in vitro and beat like normal heart tissue. In a pig model, modified mouse heart cells survived and beat near healthy tissue after a heart attack, though they did not fill scar tissue. The work, though early, could inform future heart repair strategies.
