Cow and grass management methods from Range Workshop
Area Extension Agronomist Gary Kilgore outlined native grass management and brush control as part of range work. He urged double stocking on native grass from May 1 to July 15, stressing root reserves decline after mid July. He praised early intensive stocking with burning, cited yields under intensive versus conventional stocking, and noted new fescue varieties Kentry and Missouri 96 with differing performance and release timelines. Kilgore warned against plantings of two fescue varieties together, explained growth differences between brome and fescue, and stressed soil fertility, November December nitrogen, and need for potash and phosphorus. He discussed grazing rescue by May baling, weed and brush prevention through proper stocking, and burning every two to three years for brush control, noting sumac is hard to control. Chemical options include 2 4 D with caveats about availability. Spike offers a drift-free alternative not yet cleared for Kansas, and does not control cedars or evergreens.
