Western Kansas farmers skip corn crop due to high gas costs
Western Kansas farmers face bleak prospects for corn as natural gas prices push irrigation costs beyond affordability. Mark Benning of Wichita County cannot justify $144 per acre irrigation with gas near $10 per MMBtu, while fertilizer costs rise and water levels decline. Other growers, including Kirk and Darin Heger of Circle H, plan to shift toward cotton, reflecting widespread concern over fuel and input costs amid drought and a slumping farm economy.
