Governor Bill Graves signed a three year extension shielding Kansas employers from state employment insurance payroll tax. Officials say the moratorium will save employers over $365 million while the fund maintains a $688 million surplus to pay unemployment benefits.

A traveling exhibit titled Brown vs. Board of Education in Pursuit of Freedom and Equality opens Thursday at the Ottawa Community Arts Council gallery. Bruce Laird opens the Ottawa Nautilus Family Fitness Center at 326 S. Main, offering aerobics and non aerobic programs, daycare, hot tub, and Nautilus equipment. Memberships start around 20 dollars monthly with options for single, couple, and family. facilities include three instructors, 15 hours of aerobics weekly, and plans to expand equipment and hours.
Ottawa school district reports on the two year science fair.(OPET) prizes drew residents to displays. Kristin Kraemer an OHS sophomore won grand champion with a shoe bacteria project. Desenex and Odor Eaters masked odor with no growth inhibition. Dr Scholl's killed more bacteria but stank. Anne Killough won reserve grand with Sunscreen: Fact or Fiction. Winners span from Garfield and OMS through OHS and Lincoln Elementary.
