Consumers cut insurance costs by raising deductibles. A $100 deductible on a standard homeowner policy in a Midwestern city would cost $263 annually. $250 deductible drops to $237, saving about 10 percent. Increasing to $500 saves another $26. Auto policies show similar savings. Tax deductions offset higher out-of-pocket costs for uninsured casualty losses. A Kemper endorsement links coverage to replacement costs rather than market value, paying repairs or a new car if unrepaired. Coverage excludes fire and theft. premium about 10 percent of existing collision and comprehensive, around $13 for six months for a mid-size car, available only to new-car buyers within 30 days.
