State tournament results across classes 6A 5A 3A 2A 1A with numerous matchups. Notable finals include Topeka Hayden 52 Ellsworth 50 and Waverly 70 Weskan 65 in 14A action, Hutchinson area games in 3A, and Leavenworth Seaman stunning scores. Strong showings by Garden Plain LaCrosse and Marysville appeared in listed consolations.
A patchwork of college results shows several conference matchups and scores including Arizona beating UCLA 94 to 78, Arkansas 96 over Houston 84, Texas Southern 94 over Southern University 99, and multiple other regional games. Ottawa wrestlers Jeremey Barker and Jay Wiencke won first at a weekend meet, advancing to district competition in Hiewsha.
Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri earned NCAA bids as Big Eight powerhouses. Kansas State secured a 11th seed in the Midwest, facing Xavier in Indianapolis after a 17-14 season. Oklahoma State’s fate remained uncertain until the field was announced.
Osage City inched past Belleville 50 to 46 in the 3A State Tournament consolation game. Seniors Stacey Moore and Nancy Plinsky starred as Osage finished 22-4, with Fager adding double figures and a strong defensive effort that limited Belleville through the third period.
Waverly Highboys upset Weskan 70 65 in the 1A state consolation game as Sean Robbins led with 27 points and Billy Tyson added 17. Greg Balman poured in 32 for Weskan, but fouls and late free throws sealed the win for Waverly, who finished 25 2. Weskan ends 23 4.
Waverly senior Sean Robbins, a 6-5, 200-pound two-sport standout, drew major college interest after a 30-plus point basketball season helping the Bulldogs to a 25-2 record and a Class 1A state finish. He also starred as quarterback, throwing for 2,170 yards with 27 TDs and rushing for 1,047 yards as a four-year starter. Robbins leads in state scoring, holds Waverly single-season and career records, and eyeing college basketball with offers from KU and others while several schools have verbally committed basketball scholarships.
Colorado almost stunned top-ranked Oklahoma in a tightly contested final before a technical foul on Shaun Vandiver shifted momentum. Oklahoma pulled away late to win 92-80 as Colorado, led by Stevie Wise, battled back from early deficits and faced coach Tom Miller’s firing news after the tournament run.
