Mexican Kansans Built Railroads Largest Immigrant Group
The Mexican immigrant community became Kansas’s largest by the 20th century, with settlements from Little Mexico in Topeka and Argentine areas in Kansas City to Wichita Emporia Dodge City and Garden City. Mexicans joined the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in roles from laborers to year round shop workers, often living along the tracks in boxcar colonies and later section houses. Recruitment at border towns, seasonal work cycles, and wartime labor demand shaped mass migration, family settlement, and the shift from nomadic to permanent communities across the state.
